Copper thieves strike Verizon cell tower facility

File Photo
GLOUSTER - Athens County Sheriff Patrick Kelly said Thursday a Verizon employee reported the theft of approximately 150 feet of copper wire. The theft is thought to have occurred between Aug. 8 and Sept 4 on Antle Orchard Road, approximately 1 mile from Route 13 near Glouster.

Deputy Tabler reported the ground wire was outside of the control office and entry was gained by cutting the fence on the southeast corner of the compound. Subjects entered then removed all copper wire that was accessible, including the bus ground. The thieves had to climb a tower to disconnect the wire. Other gauge wire appeared to be cut by bolt cutters.

No service was interrupted by the theft. Photos and statement taken of the site and the case remains under investigation.
